The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique ride and hiking experience that should be enjoyed by everyone.
The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel was opened in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles the capital city.
The tunnel is a link between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. It has a southern entrance in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the nearest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.
The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was inaugurated by Jerusalem's Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin. It was also attended by Mayor Moshelion Avi Balehnikov, Gihon Water Company Chairman, and hundreds of cyclists.
Jerusalem was a sought-after tourist destination because of its rich past. נווה פריצקי Elkin added that in addition to its historic treasures the modern tourist industry is incorporated into the Jerusalem city. "The inauguration of [this] tunnel project is another part of the development of Jerusalem's city Jerusalem and its transformation into an attractive city that is attractive to all types of audiences throughout Israel as well as around the globe."
Elkin, whose ministry together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, explained that his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the improvement of the tourism industry in Jerusalem and also in the development of exciting activities and ventures that connect the fascinating history of our capital city's eternal past to its future... I would like to invite cyclists everywhere to visit and enjoy the modern, well-maintained route that overlooks Old Jerusalem.
Around NIS 25 million were invested in the project, financed by the Elkin's Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality, the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, with the work carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
Elkin stated, "The Kerem Tunnel project will be a central instrument for achieving our dream to change the way transportation is conducted in Jerusalem." Elkin said that the new tunnel connects to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will join existing bike trails. The tunnel will also be paved in the various areas. This will increase cycling and encourage green transport in Jerusalem.
In the late 1990s in the 1990s, in the 1990s, Kerem Tunnel was excavated to transfer the main sewer line from Gihon Corporation to the Sorek purification plant. It is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel. It is also home to the fifth water line that connects to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.
"The Kerem tunnel project is essential to achieving the goal of changing Jerusalem's transport system. "
Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lon
The work currently in progress includes road construction, installation of blowers, as well as advanced electrical and safety systems, to ensure the tunnel is safe for people to walk through throughout the year.
The Kerem Tunnel gives you access to many places to relax, including Ein Kerem Neighborhood, the Biblical Zoo and Aquarium and also historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh or Ein Laban.
